Where did Summer Go?

On Tuesday I was down at the pool for an hour soaking up the rays and cooling down on a very hot September day here on the Costa Del Sol where I live. That was Tuesday.

Yesterday it decided to rain cats and dogs and this morning very early I was awakened to the crashing of thunder and more heavy rain! Well, it was a good excuse to drag my lazy carcass out of bed and plonk myself down in front of this thing, strong coffee in hand and get to work!

So what happened to summer?

Spain normally has fairly set weather patterns compared to the UK. There it’s fairly unpredictable. Rain. Rain. Oh boy, is that a patch of blue sky? Oh soddit, more rain! Ok, that was a bit unfair, the sun does shine sometimes there. But here the summer starts in earnest around the middle of May and gets blisteringly hot and sunny almost without a break until the middle of September.

Oh, that’d be about now!

Then even the TV weather people can’t predict what the weather will be more than a couple of hours in advance. Much has to do with the geography here on the coast.

We have the Mediterranean bringing in cool sea air, a tall mountain range only a couple of miles inland to cause all sorts of crazy and very localized weather patterns and of course that strong sun for most of the year. Cool winds come in from the sea, or from the hot interior and sometimes even the super-hot “terral” from Africa which is like standing in the breath of a hairdryer. And in the depths of winter, when temperatures can drop into single figures on the centigrade scale (not very often, thankfully) an icy wind can blow from the east carrying the chill from the snow-capped Sierra Nevada, where skiing is the order of the day just two hours drive away.

Yep, not a lot of people know it, but you can be skiing in the morning, then a couple of hours later you can be sunbathing on the beach!

So, back to my first question – where did summer go?

Well, it’s not quite gone yet, just hiding behind some clouds that’ll be gone in a day or two and the hot sunny weather will continue through September. Temperatures will fall but still stay healthy through October and still only drop to around the 20ÂșC mark in the daytime through November. Even in the winter months, it can stay at that that temperature for most of the days when the sun shines and rainy days are few and far between here.

In fact statistically, the Costa Del Sol averages 320 sunny days a year, so that means only around 45 days of cloud and even less of rain!

Now maybe you can see why I choose to live here and NOT back in the UK!
